Ever wonder why is it so hard for you to wind down and sleep early at night? Maybe you need to trace back on activities you do before bedtime and we believe, one of those includes scrolling through social media. We completely understand how fun checking Instagram or Twitter from the comfort of your bed. It easily makes us loosing track of time and without realizing, it’s already 2 A.M in the morning.
We love that technology helps us being connected globally, informing us what’s happening across the continents with a single click on the screen. On the down side, a lot of people have a hard time logging off from the internet, to the point of loosing sleep hours at night. This might seem like a small matter now, but if it builds up for a month or two, it becomes a bad habit that can affect your brain’s health and later, your overall health.
Smart phones are designed to deliver us notifications, alerting us on the subject that we keep tab in, showering our brain with new informations and updates. When it’s time for us to hit the bed, the least thing our brain needs is stream of news and entertainment, cause they will stimulate it to be active and awake. This surely contradicts the peaceful, happy and relaxing experience we hope to get from sleeping at night
What should we do to fix this before rooting to deep as a habit? The first thing to do is having yourself commited on giving your brain and body the rest they need. Understanding the importance of taking care of your body’s health will help you resist the temptation of checking your phone in bed. The second is setting some ground rules for yourself. If you aim to go to bed at 11 P.M, then you have to finish all business related to your phone at 10 P.M. Cutting off the screen time 1 hour before bed will help your body to enter a slower and calmer pace, inviting sleepiness and signaling the brain to rest.
During the transition, you can try reading a book or drinking warm milk to help you wind down. It might be hard at the beginning, but once your body learn this new habit, the only thing you have to do is maintaining the momentum until it becomes a routine. So being patience with yourself is key to successfully developing a better habit and improving your life’s quality!
